Train Cake

For Jeremy's 4th Birthday, March 2008

Jeremy's cake this year was actually quite an easy one. We saw this idea in a cake book that somebody loaned me recently. As soon as Jeremy saw the train cake, he wanted it!

The reason I feel it was so easy is that there was not much cake cutting and shaping involved. The train's cars were baked in bread loaf pans. The engine was simply a loaf standing upwards and one cut in half and piled on top of each other. I cut the top layer slightly to make it rounded on top and made a pile of 4 cookies to create the smoke stack. I used black licorice to frame the window and to connect the cars. And as you can see in the pictures, the wheels were simply cookies and the "baggage" was wrapped candies.

This was also an easy cake to store. Each train car was on a separate foil covered cardboard, so it was great for placing in the fridge.
